Genevieve V. Beller is a costume designer and artist dedicated to the idea that art matters because people matter. She has made her home in New York among a vibrant and talented community of storytellers, educators, artisans and bodega cats. Genevieve is grateful for a career spent meeting and learning about the vast patchwork that humanity has to offer and feels great privilege in bringing their vibrancy to stage, screen and print.
Genevieve’s favorite collaborations include: DO THIS a new play written by Karen Siff Exkorn starring Carmen Cusack and directed by Sheryl Kaller at the Gulfshore Playouse, BREEDERS written by Dan Giles and directed by Jaki Bradley at Access Theatre in NYC, DEAD ON HER FEET directed by Barry Kyle at the North Wall Theatre in Oxford and The Arcola in London, and BILLY BISHOP GOES TO WAR at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City. Genevieve’s styling credits include work for Ginger Minj (Runner up RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7) and Hunter Foster (staged reading at Signature Theatre). She is serving as Costume Designer in Residence at New Light Theatre Project in NYC.
Genevieve has been an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, and a guest artist/lecturer at SUNY Cortland, MCVTS School of the Arts, Trollwood Performing Arts School and Whitman College. Genevieve finds mentorship extremely rewarding and offers student guidance and workshops in Costume design, costume rendering (watercolor and digital), costume technology (from basic sewing to patterning and draping), costume crafts, and wearable tech including Arduino-controlled LED costume elements.
Genevieve has been mentored by some of the greatest talents the costume industry has to offer. She has assisted notable Broadway and Hollywood designers including Jane Greenwood, Gregory Gale, Lindsay W. Davis and Jayne Layne (former assistant to Edith Head). Recent Broadway and Off Broadway Associate and Assistant work includes: THE PARISIAN WOMAN with Uma Thurman and Philippa Soo, YOUR ALICE at BAM Fisher and Edinburgh Fringe, Fiasco Theatre’s INTO THE WOODS at Roundabout Theatre and THE LILY’s REVENGE written by and starring Taylor Mac at The Magic Theatre.
